Himalayan Consensus founder Laurence Brahm (author of The Anti-Globalization Breakfast Club: Manifesto for Peaceful Revolution), began his journey seven years ago when traveling and writing his first book on Tibet Searching for Shangri-la.
After traveling across the Himalayan plateau, people would often ask him whether he has finally found “Shangri-la”. In truth, Shangri-la is not a place to be found. Shangri-la comes from the word Shambhala, which is a core concept in Tibetan Buddhism. Shambhala is a realm of the future, or maybe of our own world, a world of social harmony where people respect each other, respect animals, respect the environment, and in turn they are respected by the forces of nature.
During his journey, Brahm was inspired by all types of community members, from monks to artists, to world leaders. Their visions to support the sustainability of their culture, economy, and environment took form in pragmatic grassroots initiatives. These inspirations motivated Brahm to put the Himalayan Consensus into action by starting his own Shambhala Social Enterprise in 2005.
This exhibit is not just about the journey of Laurence Brahm; it is about everybody’s journey.
